New Lawn Care

Here are some guidelines to ensure the RapidGrass Hydroseeding installation is as successful as possible.

WATERING

  • Do not water your new lawn for the first 24 hours so the mixture can adhere to your soil.
  • Hydroseeding provides a very efficient and moisture-retaining ground cover which, under most conditions, requires very little maintenance.

After the first 24 hours it is essential that the lawn be kept moist - but not saturated - for the first 14 days. Failure to do so will result in virtually no germination and therefore, no grass!

You do not need a lot of water - about 15 minutes of coverage each day, covering the total hydroseeding area. The goal is to keep the first few centimeters (about the top half inch) of the soil moist at all times. Check the moisture content by digging your finger down into the soil about 1/2 inch. If the soil has not dried out it is doing just fine.

During dry and hot periods, it may be necessary to water two to three times per day in order to maintain proper moisture. Conversely, if it rains substantially, it may not be necessary to water that day.

  • After 14 days or when the grass is about 2" high in all areas, cut back on the watering to once every other day. However, do not let the grass burn out by eliminating watering completely.
  • When watering, use a fine spray so that you do not disturb the seedbed. Watering in the early morning or the evening works best.
  • Keep all traffic to a minimum for the first three weeks.

MOWING

  • As soon as your new lawn is about 2 to 3 inches in height, it is time for the first mowing.
  • Subsequent cuttings should be done often and no more than 1/3 of the grass height should be removed at one time.

WEED CONTROL

  • It is very important that you do NOT use weed control products on your new young grass. The grass at this stage may react severely to the chemicals and may die.

While the hydroseeding spray mulch is guaranteed to be 99.9% weed-free, it is normal for weed seeds in your soil or those carried by wind to germinate and grow faster than the new grass.

  • Hand pull the weeds. If any weeds grow to be 3" tall, mow them to stunt their growth using a grass catcher.

THE BEST DEFENCE AGAINST WEEDS IS A HEALTHY LAWN.

FERTILIZING

  • Hydroseeded lawn will need to be fertilized within three to four weeks of installation or right after the first cutting, whichever comes sooner.

All packages of fertilizer have three numbers which represent concentrations of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) in the product.

Nitrogen , the first number, promotes rapid growth and green color.

Phosphorous promotes a healthy root system and is therefore found in significant quantities in the starter fertilizer used in the hydroseeding process.

Potassium improves the overall health of the grass and helps it withstand extreme temperatures.

We recommend Scotts® Turf Builder® Lawn Fertilizer 29-3-4 for your first application.

  • For best results, fertilize again approximately 30 days later using a more balanced slow release formula, like 15-15-15, for a healthy and strong lawn.
  • We do not recommend the use of a weed and feed product for at least 100 days after hydroseeding.
